The construction of road works such as bridges and viaducts involves the construction of expansion joints, elements installed at the bridges structural gap which allow continuity between the structures and which guarantee the physiological and non-physiological deformations and displacements of the individual decks.
Expansion joints therefore play a fundamental role in safeguarding and durability of the bridge, in addition to allowing continuity between the structures in the openings, they avoid the infiltration of water in the substructures and allow the relative movements between the structural elements which may be due to shrinkage and thermal expansion or external events such as seismic shocks and wind.
